Surface Silicatization

Surface silicatization - combustion chemical vapour deposition (CCVD) for Improving adhesion strength of adhesives, coatings and printing media.

Flame treatment is a well-established process used for influencing the adhesion strength of adhesives, coatings and printing media in numerous industrial applications. A further significant improvement in adhesion strength can be achieved by depositing a reactive silica layer, which is produced through flame pyrolysis. The combustion of a silane additive component in a flame gas atmosphere results in very dense and strongly adhering silica layers with high surface energy on metals, glass, ceramics and plastics.

When combined with adhesion promoters of appropriate functionality, this layer forms the foundation for long-lasting, water- and solvent-resistant bonds, coatings, and prints. Additional applications of this technology include temporary corrosion protection and the creation of diffusion barrier layers.

Silicatization of Surfaces – Efficient Surface Treatment with SurA Chemicals

Silicatization of surfaces is a modern surface treatment process that significantly improves the adhesion of coatings on materials such as ceramics, glass, metal, or plastic. With the innovative SurASil® process, SurA Chemicals has developed a technology that creates durable silica layers, providing optimal conditions for coatings, bonding, or painting.

What Does Silicatization Mean?

Silicatization refers to a surface treatment process in which an ultra-thin silica layer is applied to the surface. This layer alters the wettability and improves the adhesion of paints, adhesives, or printing inks. Silicatization is particularly sought after for ceramics, glass, and metals, as these materials are often difficult to coat.

The SurASil Process – Innovative Silicatization of Surfaces

SurA Chemicals relies on the flame pyrolysis technique, also known as Combustion Chemical Vapor Deposition (CCVD). In this process, an oxidative flame generates a nanoscale silica layer (SiOx) with reactive silanol groups. These groups enable exceptionally strong chemical bonding between the surface and the subsequent coating.

Advantages:

  • Inline Capability – Ideal for industrial production processes.

  • High Adhesion and Stability even on difficult-to-treat materials.

  • Efficient Processing for various geometries and sizes.

Silicatization of Ceramics – Applications and Benefits

The silicatization of ceramics is particularly effective because ceramic surfaces are highly stable and chemically inert. Using the flame pyrolysis technique, silica layers are formed that enhance adhesion, providing an optimal foundation for printing, bonding, or coating. These layers offer:

  • High Resistance to mechanical stress.

  • Long Lifespan of the layers.

  • Protection against environmental influences and chemical attacks.

Chemical Process with Silicate – Flexible and Sustainable

During silicatization, a metal-organic precursor is injected into a burner flame. The resulting silicates react on the surface, forming a dense, activating silica layer. This process is flexible and can be applied to both small workpieces and large components, such as solar panels.

Advantages of Silicatization with SurA Chemicals

  • Durability: Silica layers remain active for a long time.

  • Wide Applicability: Customizable for various materials.

  • Environmentally Friendly: An alternative to chromating, phosphating, or etching processes.
